CHRISTMAS. When the heavy peaks are quilted With the fresh December snows, And the cottonwoods are singing-While the freezing north wind blows, Then we see the snow flakes' beauty, Then the Winter seems sublime. Who could mourn the loss of sunshine In the merry Christmas time? When we sit around the hearth, and Watch the cinders play ping pong, And the clock keeps time and meter To the kettle's cheerful song; When the faces of the loved ones, With keen pleasures are ablaze; Who can half-deny that Christmas Is the merriest of days? How our beings glow at Yule tide! How our natures mellow too All past aches and pains forgotten, There is nothing that we rue; E'en the thief forgets his booty, And the miser shuns his gold; And the foe of last year's feud, Plays the Santa Claus of old. Then old Winter's breath is laden With the sweet perfume of joy, And the atmosphere rings gaily With the cheers the winds employ. Nature's sweets are all donated From her season's Christmas tree, And the Santa Claus of pleasure Brings his gifts to you and me |
