Show Hess Bonnie Page Eight Ode to a Jackass by George London Have you seen Alice the donkey, The grey-striped donkey! Following aft is cart of wood As she trots along the byway. Have you ever seen her by the byway? Her patter is dainty like a lady, Her head is high, her lashes long; No ordinary donkey brown, for she, Demurring eyes, is a donkey grey. Eternal Light by Jerry Carlile A gust of evening air Danced capriciously Through the meadow green, Across the quiet stream And the stubbled field, And through the oak That stands against the sky. In a darkening room An old man lay and watched The silken curtain stir, Felt a cool breath Touch his withered cheek, Closed his weary eyes And passed away. The dark had come To the vale and man, Yet in some land Beyond the seas and hills The light now shone As brilliant as the noon. SHOCK by Marjorie Hill Her face was a study in panic and dread As she drew near the fearful machine. The time now had come, and she lifted her head And drew forward in agony keen. But lo, as she stared at the horrible dial Her alarm turned to joy, for she found She needn't have feared, and she started to smile, For the scales showed the loss of a pound. Conversation In The Library by Dorothy Ridges Say, who's that fellow over there With the dimple in his chin? He sure has pretty wavy hair, And what a darling grin! Gosh, what a build! He looks so strong. I'll bet he's good at swimmin', And just from looking, I would say He has a way with women. You say you know him personally? You say he has a wife? Well, I wouldn't like him anyway. No sir, not on your life! Page Nine |
