During that time she documented her personal life and the medical practice of Edward, the community of Ogden and national events such as the outbreaks of WWI and WWII. The diaries also include newspaper and magazine clippings, memorabilia and pins. |

We wrote about the ue three heals ago when it = os was reported in British medical journals. Last month it given _ was the green light by the Food and Drug administration for use Dr. in this counVan Dellen try. There is no doubt it reduces swelling and relieves pain. Arthritis and gout are chronic diseases, and any remedy that can be used safely over a long period is welcome. Passes Test Indomethacin has _ passed this test. Unpleasant side effects occur, as with many drugs, but these are not seri- ous and disappear when treatment is stopped. The chance of developing headache, dizziness, nausea, or drowsiness is — lessened when the dose is kept to a minimum. ; The cortisone group of hormones is as effective, but more serious side reactions are likely to occur when used for long-term therapy. Various Forms These vary from the devel- opment of a moon facies to diabetes, but these conditions disappear when the drug -is discontinued. Anti-rheumatic’ agents such as phenylbutazone and chloroquine also lead to side reactions when used over a long period. Aspirin is the safest of all. Indomethacin does not be- long to the cortisone group. It is a nonsteroid, anti-inflammatory agent, and also re duces fever due to inflamma tion. Qbeeeee The product is most useful in a variety of rheumatic con- ditions, including gout and fibrositis. In a recent report on 99 victims of rheumatoid arthritis, poor results were obtained in 16. Excellent results were obtained in 10 of 11 patients with gout. Relief lasts up to 16 hours after administration of the . drug. Side Effects Limited This is of practical value for those with morning stiffness, which is such an unpleasant feature in arthritis. The symptom is avoided by taking a small amount by mouth at bed time, or by using a suppository containing Indomethacin. found physicians British there were no side effects in 40 arthritics using the latter, and improvement was noted in 30. |
