Show The Ogden home of E.O. and Martha Bybee Wattis, at 2540 Eccles Avenue, became a hub for their children and grandchildren. The home is currently being restored by Jacques Littlefield, Denise Sobel, Paul Wattis Jr., and Paul Wattis III. Ed Littlefield often mentioned having been born in his grandparents' home - but his birth took place in the house they owned prior to moving to Eccles Avenue. "After my birth," Littlefield wrote, "my grandfather Wattis moved to a house that was, by Ogden's standards, large and elegant. It had been designed by a disciple of Frank Lloyd Wright. It was a two-story brick structure, as were many Utah houses. The rooms were large and quite formal. "My mother...was the fifth of eight children. It is fair to say that everyone loved my mother.... She liked to live as well as she could, and her father was generous with her, as he was with all his children. "She taught me to read before I started school. I started to read odd things for my age. On the table in my grandfather's living room were three books of poetry by Robert W. Service. I read all those poems. I was in the second or third grade when we had a parent-teacher day [and] my mother came to the school. Each child was required to stand and recite a poem. Most of the children recited wholesome poems about "High upon some yonder hill/ Grows the golden daffodil." When it was my turn to recite, I began: You can talk of gin and beer When you are quartered safe out here And sent to petty fights at Alder Shatit. But when it comes to slaughter, You'll do your work on water.... "I thought the teacher was going to die! My mother managed to hold back fits of laughter." |
