Image Captions Brass steam whistle valve. "AMERICAN STEAM GAUGE VALVE MFGCO. BOSTON USA." 9" tall. The locomotive whistle would be mounted on the top of the gauge. A cable/rope would extend to the locomotive cab. The engineer would pull on the rope releasing steam into the whistle. The whistle comminicated different operations. Two blasts would indicate forward movement. Three blasts would indicate reverse motion. Two long, a short and a long in sequence indicated approach to a reailroad crossing. One blast would indicate the engineer was waiting for orders.
