051_POW Camp Installation of Overhead Handrails

Title 051_POW Camp Installation of Overhead Handrails
Description A collection of photographs and oral history quotes that document the history of the Prisoner of War camp at Defense Depot Ogden that opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. The oral histories were conducted with widows of German and Italian POWs, former guards, and community members that worked with the POWs.
Image Captions On the Utah Army Service Forces Depot Details one of the chief difficulties was the matter of transportation of the prisoners of war and the Italian Service Units from the Compounds to the Administration and Storage areas. A final solution was the removal of seats in the train and the installation of overhead handrails made of available pipe, the work being done by German prisoners of war, thus providing transportation for the additional five hundred prisoners of war previously transported by truck.
