Show 4 - work closely with GE in areas such as finance and accounting, but generally we believe that we will continue to be quite autonomous. Q. Do you have automatic retirement at the age of 65? A. Yes, there have been a few exceptions to that, but I believe that the board has to approve all exceptions. Q. GE has indicated that Utah's strong business relationships in Japan will open a lot of doors to GE. Frankly I'm very skeptical about that & I find it hard to believe. Could you comment? Q. It's hard to evaluate in dollars & cents terms of course but there are examples when one's experience can be very helpful to the other. I can cite an example that has been very helpful to us. Because of our sudden acquisition of Samarco we found ourselves heavily involved in Brazil, an area we have not known well historically. GE of course has had experience in Brazil for a number of years and we have found their experience very helpful to us. A specific example of that is that GE was very helpful to us in reviewing a proposed salary structure program for employees in Brazil. Q. Has GE provided capital to Utah? A. Yes, in the form of a loan which we have used to pay off some of our higher cost borrowings. Of the $100 million line we have recently established with GE, we will probably use $60 million within a month. This type of arrangement is of course beneficial to both companies since it reduces our interest costs and gives GE an opportunity to improve their interest income. Q. GE is a manufacturing company Utah is more entrepreneurial so that your management styles are quite different? A. I don't think they are that different in many respects. For example, I think our reporting procedures are very similar, and both companies have a keen interest in people. This interest in people has always been very important to Utah and I'm pleased to see how important it is to GE. For a company so large, I think they do an excellent job with people. |
