This Railway Post Office car was built in September 1949 by American Car & Foundry and used on the Oregon Short Line (a UP subsidiary) between Ogden and Malad, Idaho. When Union Pacific lost its mail contracts many of the old RPO cars were relegated to Maintenance of Way service, including no. 5819. The car was painted in the UPs maintenance green and renumbered as 903680 for use as a tool car. Very little was done to change the interior. The car wound up in a private collection in Spokane, Washington, and was purchased by the museum for $21,000, a D&RGW lantern and three pieces of railroad china. It was moved by Union Pacific and arrived on May 10, 2001. Restoration commenced immediately, with Northern Utah Glass donating the windows and Union Station volunteer Bryce Draper machining the replica catcher arms. The car was painted by Swift Painting. |
