Show Marriner Stoddard Eccles 1890-1977 CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Edmund Wattis Littlefield 1914-2001 PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER Two remarkable - and remarkably different - men propelled the original Utah Construction Company to amazing heights of productivity and profits. Born a generation apart, their reason for any acquaintance was the railroad-building company established by their forebears, a company that the pair later launched into the stratosphere of astonishing success. To Marriner Eccles, who for 17 years led the Federal Reserve System, the name Ed Littlefield resonated as an occasional playmate of his eldest son. When, as a young adult, Littlefield overheard Eccles' name it fairly bristled; his relatives said Marriner had usurped the destiny of Ed's grandfather to serve as the UCC president. Regardless, when the time came, each man was fair enough to meet the other halfway and too insightful to ignore the other's talents. When they teamed up midway through the 20th century, a heavy construction company began to transform into a mining multi-national. Then, in 1976, when Utah International merged with General Electric in the largest merger of its type in the United States to that time, their coup became legend in the annals of corporate success. |
