Elaborate clothing was the current vogue, along with the close harmony and handle-bar mustaches of the barbershop quartet and the violent tragedy and equally violent joy of the melodrama. Tastes have changed considerably since the period of the "gay nineties," but a stroll along a country lane on the part of a young man and woman is still the popular form of entertainment it was then.
