Show by West LaRae Anderson Harmon Barton 1920 "The "roaring twenties" were characterized by drastic changes in the day, for the country was undergoing a period of postwar prosperity the like of which it had never known before. Prohibition was in full swing 'bootlegging" and "speakeasy" were household terms. Women had just been given the right to vote and began to assert their independence; they prided themselves upon being gay and ultra-sophisticated "flappers." A knowledge of the Charleston, the dance rage of the time, was vital to social advancement. A boy, a girl, and a park bench, however, were basically the same combination as they are today. Page 14 by Stephens Lucille Douglas Lowell Smith 1947 Cokes and juke boxes, movies and convertibles make up the entertainment world of the young couples of today. Speed is the ruling principle in everything from a jet-plane to a flirtation. Restlessness and impatience with old-fashioned methods and beliefs keep the youth of today perpetually in search of something new and different. Thus our young men and women are the progressives of the time, mindful of the grave responsibilities created by the scientific age and another postwar period. Page 15 |
