"That play was carried out by Smith who was carried out by Brown and Jones." FOOTBALL ODDITIES The first Tournament of Roses game in Pasadena was in 1902, not 1916, as is generally believed. Stanford invited the University of Michigan to take a trip to the coast to display their wares—and Michigan defeated Stanford, 47-0. In that season Michigan scored 550 points to none for its opponents. A tombstone in England reads: "This stone commemorates the exploit of William Webb Ellis, who with a fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time (Rugby College, 1823) first took the ball in his arms and ran, thus originating the distinct features of the Rugby game, A. D. 1823." Ellis, incidentally, was dismissed from college and publicly disgraced. Hurrah for Weber! Hurrah for Weber! Hurrah for Weber! Hurrah for Weber! Hurrah for Weber! Hurrah for Weber!
