He keeps track of the downs and the distance to be gained; watches backfield men for premature starts; declares all scores and inflicts all penalties. He usually stands behind the team in possession of the ball. THE UMPIRE—He supervises the players and their conduct; watches for off-side plays and holding on the line, and for illegal use of the hands by the interference on sweeps and open field play. HEAD LINESMAN—This official and his two assistants move with the ball, always being opposite the point where it is down. One pole marks the spot of the last "first down," while the other, ten yards further on indicates the point to which the ball must be advanced for the next "first down." FIELD JUDGE—The field judge usually takes position some twenty-five yards behind the defensive team. In the main, he is there to see that the rules covering forward passes and receipt of punts are properly complied with by the players of both teams.
