Lacey is a backfield performer and Brown is a standout tackle. The Wildcats battle Westminster of "Salt Lake in a league game at the new Weber College Friday at 8 p.m. SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 6, 1953 Two Hawaiian Stars Arrive; Weber College Dedicates New Stadium September 18 By ENSIGN RITCHIE Graduation nearly wiped out Weber College's 1953 starting football lineup, but the return of several husky linemen makes things appear bright for the Wildcats and Coach Milt Mecham and the Purple and White performers drill at Monroe Park. Mecham will have almost a freshman team, but its weight, especially in the line, will outdo the rather small squad he used during the 1952 season. Last year the Wildcats won only two games and lost seven. Coach Mecham had some men on that team, however, that he hated to lose. Among them were, Daurel Barnes and George Taylor at ends; Jack Mowes at tackle; Dick Brown, Max Cologna and Glen Bridges, at guards; Jack Andrews and Sonny Freeston, quarterbacks; Don Shaw and Ron Lowder, fullbacks. When the squad reported for training last week, the Weber College mentor was happy to see a couple of big rugged freshmen tackles Jack Hansen of Ogden High School and Sam Mok-auhi from Hawaii. They weigh 200 and 190 pounds respectively and have both looked good in drills up to now. He also has Jack Brown and Ray Lewis back from last year's squad who are pretty good sized lads themselves. Mecham said this was bis weak spot last year and the main reason was because of the weight shortage. Colorful Centers footed kicker, will do most of the punting. Coach Mecham said all these men have good chances for starting assignments and he probably won't be able to name a starting lineup until just prior to the opening game. Only Clair Anderson is helping Mecham with the coaching this year. Dick Williams, who acted as backfield coach last season, isn't back. Added to Schedule Weber has added the University of Utah Frosh and Utah State Agricultural College Frosh, and San Diego JC to their schedule, but have dropped Carrol College, of Montana, and Mountain Home Air Force Base, in Idaho. All home games will be played at the new stadium on the campus on 36th Street, and will be played under the lights at 8 p. m. Last year Weber knocked off Carbon and Branch Aggies, and were beaten seven times. Mecham is confident that this year's outcome won't be so one sided. The season schedule follows: September 18, San Diego Junior College at Ogden, 8 p. m. September 25, Weber at Branch Aggies, 8 p. m. October 2, Westminster at Weber, 8 p. m. October 9, University of Utah Frosh at Weber, 8 p. m. October 16, Weber at Ricks, 2 p .m. October 23, Weber at Boise, 8 p. m. October 30, Weber at Carbon, 2 p. m. November 6, Weber at Oregon Tech., Klamath Falls, Oregon, 8 p. m. November 14, USAC Frosh at Weber, 8 p. m. Two centers from last season are back and Mecham is looking for a lot from this pair. Wayman Cash, who stopped many opposition runners, is expected to halt his share of plays after play gets under way Sept.. 18. He will undoubtedly receive a lot of help at that position from Vernon Miller, an 185-pounder. Five freshmen guards turned out for practice to go with the returning Ken Karawa and Tom Potter. Those who have impressed Coach Mecham most are Steve Foulger, who came to Ogden from Eugene, Ore., to attend school at Weber, and Lynn Perkins, who played for Ogden High School last fall. Both are big men and should give Karawa and Potter a lot of competition. He is especially pleased with his ends for the 1953 season. They are equipped with more heighth, speed and depth. Sid Wyatt, who had been listed on the Brigham Young University roster earlier this season has been working out with the Wildcats. He is 6 feet four inches tall and weighs 190 pounds. Dale Young, who played one year for Weber in 1949, before serving time in the service, is back to give the grid sport one more try. If his pass catching and defensive work measures up to that year, he will a very valuable wingman. He has brought his weight up to 195 pounds. Expected to press these men for starting berths are Russell Whitaker and Don Crompton. Mecham hated the idea of losing Jack Andrews at quarterback but after watching Tom Musgrave, Max Scott and Chuck Can-field work out, has pretty well gotten used to the idea. All three are natural T-formation quarterbacks. After the first week it appears that Musgrave has the best throwing arm. At halfback he will have Bill Lacey, Dick White, Bill Price, Gary Belnap and Jim Swenson, which gives him a lot of depth at these positions. Tom Kearns and Mathew Kao-nohi are cinches to hold down the fullback slot. Kearns, a |
