Show FROM The THE PASTOR'S “Church” Is One (Matt. Peter had Savior, just voiced “Thou art his PEN Foundation 16: 18) great confession of the the Christ, the Son of The Jesus said to him, “Blessed art thou, Jesus Simon as divine Living God.” Bar-Jona; for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.” Many biblical scholars believe and the faith that lay behind it was this confession of Peter, it, which was the rock on which Jesus was to build his Church. Dr A. T. Robertson gives this interpretation. “What is the rock on which Christ will build his vast Temple? Not on Peter alone or mainly or primarily Peter by his confession was furnished with the illustration for the rock on which His Church will rest. It is the same kind of faith that Peter has just confessed. In verse 17 Jesus says, “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona.” Then in verse 18 he says, “And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter’? When Peter was first brought to Jesus, Jesus said to him, “Thou art Simon, the son of Jona thou shalt be called Cephas (Aramaic for Peter), which is by interpretation, A stone.” Now that prophecy has been fulfilled. “Simon, the son of Jona has become Peter the rock, the redeemed man, and upon this rock foundaticn my Church.” of redeemed manhood I will build F G Cholmondeley has expressed it in this fashion, “It is like the farmer taking up the sample, and declaring, “With this corn will I sow my field, or the woman viewing the pattern, and saying, “Of this stuff will I have a dress. And yet, after all has been said, it is true in a very real sense that “The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord.” |
