Although Sargent was a frequent visitor to the library during the work, he completed the oil on canvas paintings overseas. They were then shipped to Boston and affixed to the library’s walls. He used unconventional techniques, mixing different media together to create striking effects. Some elements of the murals are three-dimensional; Jesus’ is made of metal. Sargent started at the north end of the hall, which among other things, depicts the Jews’ deliverance from bondage from Egypt, with the ghostly hands of Jehovah holding back the swords of the Pharaoh and Assyrian king. | Underneath, Moses holds the Ten Commandments, surrounded by the prophets. The south wall, the socalled Christian end, shows Christ on the cross, flanked space. Work started in 1890, and Sargent put the finishing touches on what is considered his masterpiece in 1919. Everything in the room — including light fixtures, book cases and skylights — was designed by Sargent. Even then, the project was not completed.
