Five recitations per week, Orthography.This study is required of all preparatory students. Seventy Lessons in Spelling. A New Speller. Daily recitations throughout the year. Reading.Two daily recitations throughout the year. Selections from standard authors. History, (Eighth Grade.)A thorough course in American History will be given. Scudder's History as text. Elocution.Special attention will be given to voice culture, articulation and the rendering of literary selections. Five recitations per week throughout the year. Fulton & Trueblood as Text. COMMERCIAL COURSE. Bookkeeping,This branch constitutes the frame work of the course. The Ellis system of "learning to do by doing" is used as an outline. The student buys and sells merchandise and handles notes, drafts, bills of exchange, and all other business papers according to instructions. Each student is a class by himself, and as his work differs from all others, there is no opportunity for copying. This branch will require from three to six months according to the ability of the student, after which a course in practical work will be offered. In this the student does actual business with other students, also with the College bank, wholesale house, commission house and other offices. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 23 Phonography.The training in this branch is de-signed to make good, practical stenographers. The time required to complete this study depends upon the student. Some have been able to do office work in three months; others may require nine months, or even more. Classes are in session nearly all day, thus affording the student an opportunity to spend most of his spare time in class work, if he desires. Typewriting.No shorthand writer is all that he should be unless he is skilled in the use of the type-writer. Both "touch" and "sight" methods are taught. This branch is taught either separately or in conjunction with the Shorthand and Business course. Commercial Law.This course deals with the laws of trade and finance, how to draw up papers in legal form, common usages and practice pertaining to con-tracts, partnerships, corporations, negotiable papers, in fact, everything pertaining to common law. The Utah code will be used as a guide. Business Economics. The economic law of trade, with an outline of the principles of political economy applied to commerce, will be considered. It is this study that gives the business student the physical basis of business life. Commercial Arithmetic.The fundamentals of arithmetic are discussed; fractions, interest, discount and commercial transactions receive special attention.
