Show 22 FIFTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT After four to six months' work in this branch, ac-cording to the ability of the student, a course in practical work is offered. In this the student does actual business with other students, also with the bank, wholesale house, commission house, and other offices. Phonography.The training in this branch, is de-signed to make good, practical stenographers. Nine out of ten of those who secure employment as stenographers find it a stepping-stone to advancement in every direction. The stenographer is brought into close personal contact with his employer. Our graduates are now holding positions of trust all over the State. The time required to complete this study depends upon the student. Some have been able to do office work in three months, others require nine months, or even more. Our students are able to maintain a speed of from 100 to 150 words per minute. Classes are in session nearly all day, thus affording the student an opportunity to spend most of his time in class work. Typewriting.Typewriting is a sister art with shorthand. No shorthand writer is all that he should be unless he is skilled in the use of the typewriter. Both "touch" and "sight" methods will be taught. This branch is taught either separately or in conjunction with the Shorthand or Business course. Commercial Law.This course deals with the laws of trade and finance, how to draw up papers in legal form, common usages and practice pertaining to contracts, partnerships, corporations, negotiable papers, in fact, everything pertaining to common law. Court cases, both civil and criminal, will be a feature of this course. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 23 Business Economics.The economic law of trade, with an outline of the principles of political economy applied to commerce, will be considered. It is this study that gives the business student the physical basis of business life. Arithmetic.Applicants for this course are sup-posed to have completed the eighth grade work of the district schools. However, young men find women of mature thought are capable of pursuing this course to a successful termination without such preparation. The fundamentals of arithmetic are discussed: fractious, interest, discount, and commercial transactions receive special attention. This is of great benefit to business students and to those who have finished the eighth grade, but are not thoroughly familiar with the fundamental principles. Daily drill in written and oral addition will be a feature in the business department. English.This course includes grammar, composition, correspondence, and spelling. PEDAGOGY. Theory of Teaching.Required of third year students in the Normal course. This course embraces a study of the spirit, habits, and responsibility of the teacher; organization and government of schools; the teacher's relation to the parents, to the pupils, and to his profession. Two hours per week throughout the year. Training.Required of fourth year students in the Normal course.
