The trigonometrical functions, general formula of plane and spherical trigonometry, solution of plane spherical triangles, practice in the use of logarithmic tables. The courses in history and domestic science extend through three years and give the student a good idea of general history. In each course the text is followed to give the student the thread of historical events. Considerable library work is required, which is made the basis of class discussion, and of written work. Two essays are required each semester on subjects assigned for special work. THE ORIENT AND GREECERequired of second year students in the Classical course. A general survey of Oriental nations, with special reference to their contribution to Western civilization; the development of the Athenian constitution and the institutions of Sparta; the city-state, with reasons for its development; Athenian culture will be studied as the highest type of Grecian civilization; the contact with the East, and the spread of Hellenism. The ancient history of England, the conquest by the Germanic tribes, the consolidation of the nation into one state, and the constitutional development, will be considered. CIVIL GOVERNMENTRequired of third year students in the Normal course, Historical development of American institutions, a careful analysis of our government, and a discussion of present policies and problems.
