Show 18 WEBER STAKE ACADEMY English Grammar III. Special attention will be given to sentence structure, and to composition work. Effort will be made continually to correct improper habits of speech. A critical study of at least one selection from a standard author will be included in the course. Buehler's Practical Exercises in English, with a suitable high school Grammar. Five hours per week throughout the year. IV. SingingPractice in part singing, the object being to acquaint the young men with the most useful and popular missionary hymns. In this course the Y. M. M. I. A. and Missionary song book is used. Two hours per week throughout the year. In connection with Courses 1 and 2, special attention will be given to testimony bearing, and to extemporaneous speaking on the principles of the Gospel. Music Conservatory of Music JOSEPH BALLANTYNE, Director Voice Culture and Theory. JOHN J. MCCLELLAN, Piano, Organ and Theory. WILLARD E. WEIHE, Violin. A regularly established conservatory of music has been provided within the school, where instruction may be had in Voice Culture, Piano, Violin, Organ, Harmony, Counterpoint Orchestralin and Composition. Special concessions are made to pupils of the Academy. Pianos will be furnished at reasonable rates to those desirous of practising during school hours. Academy Choir JOSEPH BALLANTYNE, Director. Practice one hour each week. A choir of one hundred mixed voices is regularly maintained to furnish music for devotional exercises each morning. Pupils with sufficient natural endowments may be enrolled. Credit of 1 hour toward graduation is given choir members. NINETEENTH ANNUAL REPORT 19 Sight Singing JOSEPH BALLANTYNE, Instructor. 2 hours throughout the year. This course will include the principles of sight singing, based upon the simple harmonic combination, to be found in the major or minor scales, and continuing through easy stages to the more difficult (composing for normal students). Advanced Sight Singing An advanced sight singing class will be made a permanent part of the work. Those only who have succesfully passed the first year will be entitled to membership. The class work will include advanced sight singing in four parts, also instructing the prepared choristers for the work of conducting. (2 hours throughout the year). Academy Band E. W. NICHOLS, Director. Practice two hours each week. A brass band has become a regular part of the musical department. Instruction in class is given band members in general ensemble, playing, phrasing and shading. Students of the Academy who play instruments are entitled to membership, free of charge. Preparatory Branches GRAMMAR.Abundant practice in composition work. Five three-quarter hour recitations per week throughout the year. ARITHMETIC.Standard Arithmetic.Milne completed. Wentworth's High School Arithmetic for supplementary work. Five three-quarter hour recitations per week throughout the year. GEOGRAPHY.Tarr and McMurry's Complete Geography with special reference te Utah and Weber County. Five half-hour recitations per week throughout the year. DRAWING.Work from objects, with some attention to decorative design and historic ornament. Two hour recitations per week throughout the year. |
