Show In addition to Utah and Morrison-Knudsen, the long familiar group of contractors that built Norfork included J. F. Shea Co. Inc.; Pacific Bridge Company; MacDonald & Kahn, Inc.; General Construction Company; W. A. Bechtel Company; the Kaiser Company; and Henry J. Kaiser Company. Approximate cost of the project was $10,000,000. Integrated Steel Plant - The owner of this $43, 000, 000 steel plant was the Geneva Steel Division of U. S. Steel Corporation. The project was located at Provo, Utah, and was built for the Defense Plant Corporation during World War II. This engineering and construction work was carried out under great urgency as a result of the war and it was necessary to work with many other engineers, contractors, and subcontractors. Utah sponsored this work along with J. H. Pomeroy & Co. Inc. and Morrison-Knudsen Company, Inc. The scope of the work included the following: 1. Site preparation on 1600 acres of land. 2. Excavation and concrete foundation, approximately 500,000 cu. yds. for all facilities. 3. Foundation piling for heavy structures. 4. Temporary buildings for all contractors and personnel. 5. Reservoir for recirculation of water. 6. Reinforced concrete pipeline for water supply. 7. Underground piping and conduits for utilities. 8. Setting rolling mill and power house machinery. 9. Fifty miles of plant roads. 10. Seventy miles of railroads. 11. Coal handling structures. 12. Ten miles of roads and railroads at the coal mine. 13. Dalomite quarry facilities. In addition to the above construction, Utah performed a vast majority of all surveying and field engineering for this $160,000,000 installation. Yard extensions in Utah, Nevada, and California for Union Pacific Railroad Company in the amount of $294,000. Lumber Railroad in Arizona for Southwest Lumber Mills in the amount of $246,000. 6040 Haulage Tunnel in Utah for Utah Copper Company in the amount of $1,186,000. Concrete Paving in Utah for the U. S. War Department in the amount of $120,000. The interchange at Marysville, California, for California Department of Public Works in the amount of $1,879,000. |
