The Northeast ore bossy is estimated to contain 1 8 million tons of ore with an average grade of 0.65 percent copper and a varying molybdenum content. The copper mineralization occurs in an arkosite as both disseminated and fine stringers of chalcopyrite. The ore body lies under 200 ft. of alluvium, and is followed by thicknesses of up to 40 ft. of waste conglomerate. Total overburden to be stripped amounts to some 20 million cu. yd. Strapping of the alluvium was started in the fall of 1962 with a fleet of nine scrapers assisted by ripper-equipped bulldozers. This method of stripping will phase into blasting and shovel loading of the hard conglomerate when it is exposed sometime in 1964. The new pit will be developed with 50-ft, benches in the alluvium and 40-ft. benches in the waste and ore. By 1967 the pit will measure approximately 2,500 ft. x 1, 800 ft. at the rim. In order to delineate additional ore reserves, a drilling program is mow underway calling for 40,000 ft. of vertical diamond drilling. The current program is contracted with completion scheduled for 1964. All holes are being drilled with two mobile rigs on 200-ft. centers. Tri-cone bits are used to penetrate the alluvium, and then NX. bits for coring. Holes are averaging 1,000 ft. in depth, and drilling is proceeding at a rate of 2,500 ft. per month on a 2-shift basis. By the time operations begin 1967, the Northeast pit will form a link between the present Pima pit and the Mission pit of American Smelting & Refining Co.
