Show Departmnet of Justice FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FRIDAY, OCTOBER l, 1976 AT 202/739-2014 The Department of Justice announced today that it does not intend to oppose the proposed acquisition of Utah International, Inc. by General Electric Company. Hugh P. Morrison, Jr., Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Antitrust Division, said that the Department's position was stated in two business review letters issued today to counsel for General Electric and Utah International. The Department previously issued business review letters to the parties on July 23, 1976, refusing to say it would not challenge the proposed merger. Those earlier letters stated that the Department's assessment of the proposal had focused upon General Electric's role as a leading supplier of nuclear steam supply systems to utilities, Utah International's prominence as a uranium mining and milling company, and the competitive advantages which General Electric may have derived in the nuclear steam supply systems market as a result of the merger. A nuclear steam supply system consists of a nuclear reactor and its related equipment used to drive turbine generators for the production of electricity in nuclear power plants. Such systems require processed uranium as an energy source. |
