Show 4 - no regular schedule that we keep. Q. How did you explain the merger to your Australian employees? A. Bud Wilson & I went to Australia. We had two sessions in Brisbane and visited the operations to communicate the merger idea and to respond to their questions. Q. What kind of reaction did you get in Australia? A. There was some concern initially. In fact, that came as something of a surprise to us because UDC thinks of itself as being quite independent so we were surprised that they showed as much interest as they did in a Utah International merger. Q. Do you think Utah's autonomy will continue? A. Yes. As long as we continue to manage our business properly. Q. Do you have good quality coal? A. Yes. Some of the U.S. coals are the best in the world, but our coal is very good. Q. Why are the costs at your coking coal operations so low? A. We have the unique advantage of very favorable physical conditions. The topography is good and the climate is subtropical. We have thick coal seams which can be surface mined and we have excellent access to a deep water port. To appreciate our low cost position, you have to compare these physical conditions with those of other producers around the world. Q. How were the railroads established? A. Utah financed the railroads by making a loan to the Queensland state government which owns and operates the railroads. Q. Who owns the port? A. Unlike the railroad, the port is owned & operated by Utah. Q. How was this coking coal region located and developed? A. Utah sent a geologist to Australia in 1960 and by 1961 he had focused on Queensland. Utah conducted about 4 years of drilling and quality evaluation. Blackwater was started in 1965 and the first shipment came in 1968. Concept |
