| Biographical/Historical Note |
William H. (Bill) Shurleff (1916-2011) was fascinated by a demonstration on pioneer broom making when he attended at the Festival of the American West at Utah State University in the 1960s. He sent away for broom corn seed and planted it in his garden. The broom corn, which does not grow ears, grew tassels used in making brooms. He cut the broom corn tassels, hung them to dry, and removed the seeds from the tassels with a curry comb. He fashioned broom handles from various types of wood. He made a replica of the pioneer broom maker. The foot control on the broom maker helped him regulate the tension and tightness of the cord as he wove the cord to hold the tassel clusters tightly around the handle. When finished, he painted the woven area with val oil. He gave away his keepsake brooms to family and friends. |
