Show sday, June 14,1972 takes honors for bread loaves onto a wire rack to cool. Key worth suggests that the bread be placed in a spot out of the draft for optimum results. Charles K. Siefert of 2685 Lander Court in Newbury Partk didn't tell his family he was entering the News-Chronicle's "From Pop's Pantry" cooking contest -- and they didn't believe him when he told them that his whole wheat bread had won second place in the breads and baked goods category. "I thought he was pulling my leg," said his wife, Ruth, "because he's never entered any kind of cooking contest before." Siefert, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, originally started making bread some 15 years ago. "Our church encourages us to have on hand a good year's supply of food," he grins, "and I had about 1,200 pounds of wheat stored. So I bought a small flour mill, ground my own whole wheat flour and started experimenting with (See MEN, Page A-24) Portable flour mill Charles K. Siefert's whole wheat bread, which won second prize in the breads and baked goods category, gets its special flavor and texture from freshly ground hard wheat flour which Siefert mills in his own home. |
