"I thought he was pulling my leg," said his wife, Ruth, "because he's never entered any kind of cooking contest before." Siefert, who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, originally started making bread some 15 years ago. "Our church encourages us to have on hand a good year's supply of food," he grins, "and I had about 1,200 pounds of wheat stored.
