Show THE BEGINNING OF RELIC GATHERING IN SOUTH MORGAN In 1929 Mrs. Maggie T. Francis was made captain of the South Morgan Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. At this time the first attempt at gathering relics here was made. A small room was obtained in the Opera House and the Morgan County Commissioners gave the Captain $50.00 to help prepare a place for the relics. This room was dedicated and made ready for the storing of articles which had been used by the early pioneers of Morgan. So many were received that it became necessary to obtain more space. So another room was obtained in the same building and an additional $50.00 obtained from the county. The next year, 1930, the old cabin was brought up from Peterson, and a corner of the Stake Tabernacle grounds was given to the same officers on which to place this building. A cement floor had previously been laid and a pro¬tecting roof was built over the cabin. This cabin was the birth place of the first white boy born in Morgan County, Charles Russell Stevens born 23rd of September 1857. The first Daughters of Utah Pioneer County organization in Morgan County was made in 1932 with Mrs. Eliza Rich as President. About two years later the County Company was reorganized with Mrs. Ethel Tippetts as President. Soon after this a marker was erected near the old cabin by Mr. Charles Young. The rocks in this marker were gathered from historic places in the County and were given by members of the D.U.P. organization. Mr. Young also obtained the oil mill wheel which was placed near the cabin. This wheel had been used in the grist mill at Richville, which was built in the early 1860's by George W. Taggart and the Hinman Brothers. |
