In 1928, Utah Construction Company completed its first project outside of the United States with the 110 mile railroad for Southern Pacific of Mexico. Over the next 30 years, UCC continued to work on projects in Mexico including dams, roads, mining, and canals. The collection contains several booklets and correspondence along with approximately 500 photographs. |

Show favorable conditions amount to about $13 to $16 per foot. Apart from Asarco, other companies that are active in Sonora include Placer Develop-ment Mexicana, Noranda Mines, Homestake Mining Company, Pure Silver of Canada, New Jersey Zinc, Quintana Minerals, Phelps Dodge, Amax, and Cominco. All of these companies maintain geologic field teams and have either mapping or drilling projects under way. Cia. Minera Trion S.A. composed of Penoles with 52 percent and Homestake and Minera Continental with 24.5 percent each is reportedly drilling an important porphyry copper deposit near Hermosillo. Cia. Minera Coronado is drilling a copper prospect north- west of Alamos. Michoacan In 1970, Patino of Canada acquired the La Verde Property from Lytton Minerals and is reported to have completed more than 2,700 linear feet of tunnels, 39,000 feet of core drilling, and 2,500 feet of percussion drilling. On the basis of this work, Patino is reported to have proven up reserves amounting to 41 million tons containing 0.76 percent copper. Metallurgical testing and feasibility studies are now under way. Other Areas Because of the lack of reporting facilities, it is difficult to identify exploration activities that are being conducted in other Mexican states. It is rumored, however, that Placer Development Mexicano is exploring for copper in Guerrero and Jalisco. Moreover, Asarco Mexicana, in partnership with J. W. Welch, is developing a copper property at El Arco in Baja California. 48 |
