Show 24 THE ACORN H. C. P. Notes Wednesday, Nov. 21st a meeting of the Junior and Senior girls was called by the officers of the H. C. P. club of 1905-06, for the purpose of re-organizing. Miss McKay presided and the following officers were elected: President Rosella M. Ferrin, Vice President Frances Poulter, Secretary and Treasurer Katherine McKay. Robert Browning was chosen as the first author to be studied. Besides the literary study, fancy work will be done during the meeting. With the assistance of Miss McKay, who has so kindly consented to assist us, we expect to have a very enjoyable as well as a very profitable year and all are united in their effort to make this year the brightest and best in the history of the club. Students, we have a club organization and are enjoying it. Go ye and do likewise. The club held its first regular meeting Wednesday, December 5, in the music room. Miss McKay gave us a very interesting introduction to Browning's life and works. Mr. Browning's "In a Balcony" was assigned for the next meeting, which will be held Thursday, December 13, 1906. We wish to express our thanks to Sister McKay for her assistance and the interest which she has taken in helping us to select a most profitable course of study. Music The completion of our new building will bring the hoped for musical accommodations. One end of the building is circular and here the choir will occupy elevated seats, the seating capacity to be about one hundred and thirty five. Besides this, there will be three or four music rooms which will probably be used for pupils of vocal culture, piano and violin to practice in during school hours. A new violin instructor has been secured for the conservatory of music. On account of Prof. Weihe's being director of the Or- pheum in Salt Lake, he is unable to teach in Ogden. Prof. Cline will take Prof. Weihe's place. Each Wednesday, Prof. McClellan is up from Salt Lake to attend, to his piano work in the conservatory. The students of the first year sight singing class have so far progressed that they are now reading in the Bass as well as Treble Cleff. Two part singing is done at each session and. soon the class will readily read in four parts. THE ACORN 25 The advanced class in sight singing will be organized very soon. Already the names have been selected and only those who have successfully passed the first year's work will be admitted. The band under Prof. Nichols is making rapid progress, and prospects are that it will be the best we have had. We anticipate their appearance before the student body about the middle of January. We hope the lecture committee will include in next season's lecture course, a grand concert by the Tabernacle Choir, the new organ and students of the Conservatory of Music. It would be a most successful venture. The other day three maidens fair Were playfully propping back their chair, When one dear lady made a slip, Which caused the other chairs to tip. The teacher looked with dreadful frown, With thundering words he called them down, He said that each must leave the room, To the study hall, and wait her doom. The maidens left, of course you know They love their dear "bug" teacher so; Then after school they went to him, That they might gain a standing in. Professor of Bugs then smiled and said, "Never you fear a moment's dread, To ladies fair I must give way, I cannot find a word to say." The girls feeling guilty intended to ask The teacher's forgiveness (a dreadful task) But when they saw the teacher's chagrin They felt that he'd committed the sin. The teacher stammered and choked a bit (The girls really thought he'd take a fit) "Forgive me girls" and blushed to his hair, The girls forgave him then and there. Elinor Bingham, '07. |
