Show 18 THE ACORN I stands for inspiration and ideals. The goddess of music is the goddess of inspiration. The only ones to succeed in music as a profession are those having the highest ideals ideals that can stand most thorough tests, ideals that are lived up to every day in the year. C, the last letter, gives the definition of the word. It stands for character and civilization. Music is a character moulding art and it sums up civilization; for the story of music is the story of man; the history of art is the history of civilization. Selected. The choir of about one hundred voices, under the leadership of Prof. Ballantyne, is now furnishing music daily in "Devotional Exercises," which adds greatly to the devotional spirit. The members of the choir are rehearsing twice a week and, by conscientious work, adding many new songs to their list. They are preparing to take part in the recitals which will be given this year by talent from Ogden and Salt Lake. The band, with Prof. Nichols at their head, is doing considerable work. Most of the boys are taking a great interest in their organization The different sections of the band are drilled every noon and, with few exceptions, the members take advantage of this opportunity. Prof. Nichols is devoting a great deal of time to the band and, with proper support, is confident of doing better this year than ever before. They will soon be prepared to give more concerts, which will start in the near future. Their first appearance was made it Senator Taylor's lecture on the night of Oct. 25, which delighted the audience. This organization certainly reflects credit to Prof. Nichols and the student body, which it represents. The orchestra, made up of sixteen pieces, is progressing rapidly with two rehearsals a week. Messrs. Pyott and Budge have improved wonderfully on the trombone, and also Mr. Read on the cornet. Prof. Nichols expects to have our orchestra rank first among those of the city. They are now rehearsing some very difficult pieces and will soon be in readiness to make a fine showing. THE ACORN 19 CommerciaI Notes On October 11 the Commercial students were called together by Prof. Hansen to organize a club promoting the interests of the Commercial Department in the school. The officers elected were: President Clarence Johnson Vice-President Leslie Van Dyke Secretary-Treasurer Leonal Read Yell Master Wilford Pyott The object of the club is to give the students broader views of commerce than those obtained from books. To do this it is intended to have the leading business men of the city lecture along their special lines. Mr. Heber Scowcroft of the John Scowcroft & Sons' wholesaling house, has kindly consented to give a lecture in the near future on "Wholesaling." |
