Show 18 The Acorn LITTLE THINGS "Little drops of water, Little grains of sand, Make the mighty ocean, And the pleasant land." Every student attending this institution has, or should have some definite aim in view and should do something each day to bring this goal a little nearer. Since each act aids in forming our character, just as each small stream helps to make the ocean, we should certainly be careful what we do. One writer says, "We can never be too careful what seeds our hands may sow, for love from love is sure to ripen, hate from hate is sure to grow." The little things which we overcome and perform each day, make us able to conquer the great ones that present themselves. In south America, there is a little animal about the size of a common gray mouse, that destroys thousands of alligators every year. It does not wait until the alligators are grown, but just after the eggs are laid, this animal seeks out the nests and punc tures every egg, thus destroying life. It is just this way in a student's life: if he cares for the trivial things and tends to the details of every day studies, he will never meet a difficulty which he cannot overcome. True worth is in being not seeming, In doing, each day that goes by, Some little good, not in dreaming Of great things to do by and by. GEMS FROM OUR LECTURERS George R. Wendling. Christ who has been at work through all ages is the most influential unseen reality. It is better to be wrong than to be an agnostic. Every great novel, poem, or musical composition has running through it some great theme or unseen reality. In the presence of unseen realities modern science bows just as faith. On the threshold of spirituality science stands baffled but brave and hopeful. Father Vaughn. Knowledge is a weapon used for or against society. Education is getting bearings aright on the sea of life. True education is to learn to smile through bitter dissappointments. Books color and frame our characters. Shake hands often with your old friends the authors, they will never leave you. The first book was written on the scroll of choas by the hand of the eternal God. Mind was given to man that he might read the lessons in the book of Nature. Authors are the gifted souls of God, who read and give expression to the mysterious lessons of Nature as it unfolds before them. Art is the child of the immortal soul. Look at literature as you would a picture, as a unit not by parts. The Acorn 19 ATHLETICS The Basket Ball season is now at hand, and we want our boys to rank high in the League, but if we are to have a winning team, we must not let them meet their opponents alone. When our boys meet other teams that are larger, stronger, and more experienced, as was the case last year, they are bound to feel more or less discouraged. But if the student body will stand by them in their defeats as well as their victories, there is no reason why we cannot again have one of the best teams of the state. During the last few years, the boys who have been chosen to represent the Athletic Department of this school, have been working under many disadvantages, in not haying a place to practice, and not being able to get systematic training. This year they have the privilege of playing in the new building and will be able to practice systematically. They are hard at work now strengthening their weak points. We are anxiously waiting for the different class teams in Basket Ball to make their appearance; for we feel that they will raise the standard of our athletics and be instrumental in assisting our team in its contests with other schools of the state. The organization of the "Cross Country Club" is now being contemplated and it is believed that this will strengthen the athletic department. This year the league games will be played in the new assembly hall and all students are expected there. The '09 basket ball team is determined to make the same record as Juniors that it did as Soph-mores. The other class teams will have to work hard if '09 doesn't again gain the championship of the class league. |
