Show 30 The Acorn Athletics November 10th the Basket Ball team was organized, West Lindsay-manager; Heber Hancock captain. Here's to the Basket Ball captain, here's to the boys, May they have joys, and joys and joys. The first match game was played November 19th between the W. S. A. and the School for the Deaf. A number of the loyal students accom. panied the team to the D. D. gymnasium. The boys played well and succeeded in making a score of 22 to 10. On November 25th was played the first game in our new hall. The Alumni showed us that they haven't forgotten how to throw baskets, when they came off with a score of 25 to our 16. It seemed like old times to have Irving, McKay, Budge, Brown and Watson back again. We highly commend the work of th Juniors and would like very much to see the other classes manifesting the same interest in athletics. If each class had a team, practice games could be arranged every night. This would not only be a benefit to the boys who are playing in the first team, but would also develop players for coming years. The Acorn 31 Music One man has said, "Music is a prayer." There are none of us who do not feel happier and more sympathetic after hearing some beautiful vocal or instrumental selection. What man or woman is there living who will not stop to listen to Music? It is not always of an elevating kind, therefore we, as a school realize the importance of putting before the people of Ogden the very best talent we can find. The Lecture Committee has secured several efficient musicians for our course this year. One of the best was Miss Maud Powell, the violinist. She is indeed master of the violin and by the attention paid her by the audience, we feel sure she made them appreciate her music. Miss Myrtle Ballinger sang two soprano solos November 12th. We appreciate them and invite her to come again. Misses Maud Lindsay and Florence Fisher sang solos at Devotional November 19th. We desire to compliment them for the work they are doing along this line. Zalia and Henry still play for us occasionally. The members of the choir are rehearsing twice a week. They are working hard and adding new songs to their list. The band has learned the scale and is now practicing the "Weber Academy March," which is to be rendered at the dedication of the new building. Never mind boys if you do disturb the H. C. P. girls, we want you to continue your practice. One of our teachers, D. Ray Shurtliff has made his appearance before the students as a vocalist. Next time we want him to bring two songs instead of one. We hope Bro. McKay will do all he can to encourage Bros. Goddard and Richards and perhaps Bro. Ridges can help them a little. |
