Page 28 Scribulus Winter WORD PICTURE It was a murky confusion of flying clouds tossed up into most remarkable heaps through which the wild moon seemed to plunge headlong. The wind had been blowing all day, and as night crept on it blew harder and louder as if it were struggling for freedom. The trees along the paths were bending forward and backward so far that they were nearly bent double. At the corners of every building the wind shrieked and cried like a child who had burned itself. All of a sudden it seemed as if the clouds had opened up and dropped all the water they held. The rain poured down in torrents, making the streets running rivers. As I made my way home, wondering if I had gone completely insane to attempt walking in such a storm, I staggered along the street, afraid of falling slates and tiles, and lurked behind buildings at angry corners deciding if I had courage enough to take the next step. It seemed as if it took me two hours to walk the three short blocks to my home. All through the night the storm pressed on as if it had been sent upon an important journey.
