Show Intramurals Rocket into Action Don't run out of the picture, Milt! Here DeMello makes a long run around right end for Dorm team No. 1, winner of second-half touch football. Out of my way! Jerry Downs crashes through as Alpha Rho's Eldon Hatch makes a handoff play. Stalwart Sigma stands at the top of the intramural pile-up as of the end of the fall quarter and the finals of touch football. In this event, only one to be complete by press time, the athletes won 350 total points. Other standings as a result of football were as follows: Dormitory, 220 points; Skull, 190; Viking and Alpha Rho, each 140. Other organizations tagged but may rally with surprise comebacks as their favorite sports are contested. Winner of first-half football was Sigma team No. 1: Keith Sewell, Glen McEntyre, Ed Barnes, Dee Wallace, Vern Hill, Allan Christiansen, LeRoy McFarland, Lynn Moore. This tough riding outfit accounted for most of the pointage piled up by the club. Winner of second half football was Dormitory team No. 1: Milton DeMello, Richard Kitamura, Henry Chai, Jerry Downs, Wesley Kekaouha, Wilbur Wilson, Valentine Asay, Richard Maybrey, George Edgington. Second half football finale between the two foregoing teams was described as a thriller when Dorm edged a 7-0 victory over the Sigma strongmen, a terrific opponent. First half play-off was between Sigma and Skull team No. 1, the score being 20-0 for Sigma. Other games which highlighted the contest included one between Alph Rho and Dorm, which the Rhovians won on a safety by a score of 2-0; and a second-half power drive on the part of both teams which showed Phoenix as a capable intramural threat but troubled with sudden weak streaks against coordinated opposition. The score in this game, against Sigma, was 6-9. The 1948-49 intramural league was won by Sigma, the big 1950 threat, and Richard (Dick) Nilsson, competing for Phoenix, won the Armstrong intramural athlete award. In 1947-48 the league was taken by Phoenix, and Ronald (Ron) Watts of Sigma was outstanding intramural athlete and winner of the Armstrong award. This handsome trophy is annually awarded by C. E. Armstrong, president of Armstrong Sporting Goods Co., 302-25th st., in behalf of the sporting goods house which he heads. Piloting the program this year are Clair (Andy) Anderson, faculty director, and Kenneth (Bish) Herrick, student manager. Also included in the intramural council are representatives of the competing organizations, the board of control and the inter-club council. Other sports underway on the fall quarter schedule are volley ball, squash and ping pong. Winter quarter will bring in basketball, water polo, swimming and possibly wrestling, besides other rounds of squash and ping pong. Listed for spring are softball, tennis, badminton, track and field, golf, horseshoes, ping pong, and swimming. THE COLLEGE BOOK STORE SUPPORTS STUDENT ACTIVITIES |
