If. Three Songs from the Cycle, “Dichterliebe,’” Opus 48 (titles to be announced) The Dichterliebe (Poet’s Love) which Mr. Gorin will choose Schumann Cycle is composed of sixteen songs from three. If Dichterliebe is not the greatest of Schumann’s song cycles (some reserve this distinction for Liederkrezs) it is certainly the most thoroughly logical and carefully integrated of them. Based upon «ww selections from Heinrich Heine’s Buch der Lieder, the cycle dates from 1840, Schumann’s big year of bursting love for Clara and his unparalleled outpouring of songs. Published in 1844, the songs were dedicated to the celebrated singer, Wilhelmine Schréder-Devrient. Schumann was a romantic and the great beauty of melodic line is never lost by concern for technical mastery. R. Standchen Strauss “Come out! Come out! Step lightly, my love, lest envious sleepers awaken. So still is the air, no leaf of the boughs above from its slumber is shaken. . . .” Wagner : ‘ : ; : Evening Star, from “’Tannhauser”’ In the last act of Tannhiauser, the minstrel-knight, Wolfram sings this song to the Evening Star, committing to its influence his beloved Elizabeth, who is dying for the love of his friend Tannhauser. ae . | Verdi In his Credo, the wily Iago affirms his belief in a God who has created him for evil. The text is a free adaptation of Shakespeare’s text. It comes at the end of Iago’s last speech with Cassio. The music is a remarkably skillful reflection of the vain and cynical character of Iago. Intermisston tMe ) He Over the Steppe ge kind cua Gretchanino ff In his youth, Alexander Gretchaninoff belonged to that small group of dating souls who called themselves The Russian National School. Intensely slavophile, they sought their inspiration in Russian themes exclusively. In Over the Steppe, he has given us the picture of that vast mournful plain of Russia, stretching to the wilds of Siberia where “never a tree nor a flowerlet grows, never a nightingale sings.” The Merry Fiddler Phe arr, Revutzki “Tam the merry fiddler. I play in the markets of the cities; the children dance and sing, everybody dances. I am the merry fiddler who wishes everybody a happy life.” Prayer at Bedtime Mussorgsky *Caucasian Melody : : Igor Gorin One of Mr. Gorin’s childhood memories is that of watching the Caucasian channel builders as they worked in the Ukraine and listening to them sing. One strain remained with him and inspired him to write this song. —- A young Caucasian shepherd, filled with the joy of living, is walking through the mountains with his flock; he imagines his sweetheart is near and sings to her softly. For him life is the glory of the mountains, the love of his sweetheart, and his joy in being alive. : VI. 5:30 A.M. — December, from the Cycle, “Time” Clarance Olmstead Folk song from Suffolk arr. by E.
