Although “Captain Applejack” was the largest dramatic production there are others that are well worth mentioning. The dramatic art class presented two one-act plays. ‘““The Kelly Kid,” given in assembly was the story of a mischievous young lad who could not get along with the law. “Grandma Pulls the String’, won second in the one-act play contest held at Provo. Grandma, played by Retta Jacobs, was the person who could hear when she wanted to and be deaf when she didn’t want to hear; Hilde- & 94 Ke ND é * 4 "2 garde was played by Blanche Mayberry. She was the young, sweet little girl who tried to help the marriage of her sister. Edna Spaulding and Laura McEntire, playing their parts of mother and daughter, were beyond criticism. As sweethearts Altha Mathews and Floyd Farr showed the audience they were not tenderfoots in the art of love making. Dalim kg OY? ‘ ey 171k | Fy — Joyce Powell, Ivan Anderson, i } G4 NDER the capable direction of Alonzo Morley, the three-act comedy “Captain Applejack” was presented in the Weber High auditorium on two nights, December 22 and 23. “Captain Applejack”’ was a very difficult and technical play but because of the good cast an enjoyable performance was given on each night. 7 The play tells the story of an Englishman, Ambrose Applejohn, who is bored with the monotony of the life about him. He decides to sell his holdings and go into the world to seek adventure. Before he gets a chance to sell his place, adventure seeks him and after one night of struggle against two sets of thieves and a terrible dream of bold bad pirates, he decides that life is not so prosaic after all. Floyd Farr, as Captain Applejack, was excellent in his portrayal. Other members of the cast who all did well were: Ben Van Schaar and Laura McEntire as Mr. and Mrs. Pengard, Geneva Ritchie as Anna Valeska, Max Smith as Ivan Barolsky, the arch villain; Mary Dyson as Aunt Agatha | Whatcombe, Leonard Harris as Lush, Verla Green as Poppy, Peary Barker as Dennet, and Glen West as Johnny Jason. Retta Jacobs played the part of the French maid and assisted Mr. Morley with the directing.
