The patriotic oratorical contest, sponsored by the Sons of the American Revolution, was held in February. Edna Spaulding carried off high honors receiving as a reward for her diligent work the S. A. R. medal. In the National Oratorical Contest Floyd Farr succeeded in winning in id e\*7s i the school, division, and state tryouts. The subject for state debating, “Resolved that installment buying should be condemned,” was used in the class series which had a most peculiar ending in that the seniors and juniors tied for first place. The affirmative team in both classes won. ey VC ee IAIAS avis AAA {9iG AN . \f 22 AAS HAs SVC eg NENG 4 [A »* Xévise r' The School Debating teams were more successful this year than they were in ’27, in spite of the fact that only one debator of the ’27 team was with us. We were represented on the affirmative side by Ellen Barker and Ben Van Schaar. They defeated Ogden High on March 29 in our auditorium, but on April 2 were defeated by Box Elder. The negative side of the question was upheld by Frances Wilson and Glen West. They went to Box Elder on March 29 and were defeated in a very close debate by a 2 to 1 decision. On April 2, however, they were victorious over Ogden High in a clash which took place at Ogden High School. In the division we came second, having defeated Ogden High twice and taken defeat from Box Elder the same number of times. Surely in reviewing this record we cannot but say that the efforts of the speech activity students, and those of Mr. Morley, who is debating coach, were very profitable. he, ANIOR DiC PN) “a io Tz € Cy GAIALQICIAIAL DIC IAS Di ISCO!
