Show 12 WEBER ACADEMY CATALOGUE In addition to this equipment, there has been added this year a gas range of the latest improved style, thus making it possible for the department to give demonstrations with both kinds of fuel. The Domestic Arts Department occupies the north half of the first floor of the old building. It includes a large, nicely carpeted sewing room and cutting and fitting room. The department is furnished with nineteen sewing machines, electric iron, models, etc. Agricultural DepartmentAlthough the work has been going on less than a year, the department has been equipped with an excellent reference library, the gift of Heber Scowcroft, and with capillary tubes, percolating funnels, burettes, scales and other apparatus sufficient for good laboratory work in agricultural problems. Rest Room The rest room is supplied with conveniences for students who are seized with sudden illness or meet with accidents during school hours. Here proper care will be taken of all who need adimnistration or medical aid. Carpenter Shop The Manual Training department occupies two large rooms, and is well equipped with benches, up-to-date tools, and machinery for giving a good practical course in carpentry. Commercial School The Commercial department is well supplied with apparatus for carrying on this line of work. The bookkeeping room contains ample and modern office desks, bank, wholesale and jobbing offices. The typewriting room is equipped with fifty standard typewriters. WEBER ACADEMY CATALOGUE 13 Student Body Activities The AcornThe official organ of the Academy, is published entirely by the students, and is another means toward the development of our aims, to make strong, self-governing men and women. It has a circulation of about four hundred and fifty. DebatingThis class of student activity is receiving special attention by a committee of three faculty members. Class teams are organized to promote inter-class debates, and qualify students for inter-high school contests. A silver trophy cup was given to the Academy by the class of 1905 to encourage debating and public speaking. The cup is awarded each year to the class having the best team, with the privilege of inscribing its numerals under the "winners," and holding it as a trophy until won by another class. The class of '11 now holds the cup. Physical EducationSince physical activities are necessary to the perfect health of the student, much attention is being given to the development of the body. Such healthful sports as basketball, indoor baseball and wrestling are introduced during the winter months, while track and field athletics and baseball take their place in the spring. To stimulate interest and encourage school spirit, a basketball league has been formed among the high schools of the state. Wrestling is to receive special attention the coming year, as the equipment for mat work is ideal. DramaticsIn the spring of each year a play is presented by students of the Academy, who win positions in the cast through a try out system. This activity is supplementary to the work in the English department. Interesting trips are taken to adjoining towns. |
