Show Assemblies House painter Rey Arnold shows mastery of the profession by tinting Valerie Egbert's gams during the sophomore kangaroo court assembly. "Ooh, it tickles." Answers Rey, "Yaas, but it's man's work." Dick Slater as Mr. Modesto struggles with Miss Victory as his two-timed girl friend, Marilyn Lam-born as Miss Weber, gives the double-crosser a mean eye and conceals horse pistol momentarily behind back. Dick gets it in the end. The whole town is there. It is the stage of the Egyptian theater. Whip Club girls enjoy the drammer too. "Trick" and "Treat" click out a tap for the Halloween assembly. The spirited hoofers are Carol and Joanne Barker. Dr. William (Wild Bill) Stratford swings his pardner at A. M. S. assembly. The known beauty in the sunbonnet is Miss "Eve" Anthony. Utah Valley Boys saw out "Turkey in the Straw" on fiddles. All up in the air are cheerleaders Brent Heninger, Janet Gourley, Bonnie Kerr, Bonnie Bowen, Leon Ray. Girls' duds this year are some of the best, making excellent display, fans say. Tooting away in all-out contribution to athletic success is the WEBER COLLEGE BAND. Big thing in the background shaped like a music holder is a bell-lyre. Mae Strand plays it. The instrument is banged with a banger, the editor says. Whooping it up, same as at the old saloon, are the Alpha Rho men and their women, front, left to right: Alta Kendall, Jerry Wallace, Dell Foutz, Jerry Hogge and their dates; rear: Carl Paul, Eugene Anderson (with megaphone), Janene Johansen, Jerry Jensen (with another megaphone), Dick Slater. Another chance to "ham" before the student body is being made most of by Sports Director Reed K. Swen-son, Backfield Coach Clair Anderson and Football Mentor Milton Mecham. Football 1951 By Jim Sullivan and Allen Cook "Narrow squeak" games kept the Weber Wildcats from taking the Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference in 1951 football but got the college second place behind invincible Boise Junior College. In both non-conference and league play, Weber won five straight home games, grabbing two of them from highly favored California elevens, tied one game and lost two. Boise bested the Wildcats by a lonely point at Idaho with a score of 13 to 12 in mid-October. Then a game at Rexburg, Idaho, came out a tie between Ricks College and Weber. The other two contests in the conference were wins for the home eleven when a game with Dixie Junior College ended at 31 to 6, and one with Carbon Junior College ended at 7 to 2. Games with California squads resulted in wins over Modesto College 19 to 13 and over Visalia Junior College 19 to 12. The games were played in Ogden. The other two of the nine-games series for the season were with Hill Air Force Base, 24 to 6 for Weber, and with Oregon Technical Institute, Klamath Falls, 41 to 14 Oregon. Coach Milton C. Mecham reviewed the achievement of the season by commending his boys. "It has been one of the finest squads I have coached. The men worked together and played as a squad rather than as individuals, which is the most important thing in the game. The coach also thanked the student body for the fine support it gave the team this year. "Without the students we certainly would not have done half so well," Mecham remarked. Weber is still maintaining its sportsmanlike viewpoint toward the game, the coach indicated. He said, "Our squad this year came from within a radius of forty miles of Weber College with the exception of two men, which means Weber College is not out buying athletes but is more interested in getting men to play football because they like to play it for the enjoyment and development they receive from it and not for monetary gain." The mentor likewise had a word for the first year players. "To those freshmen who have another year of football left, I say study hard and keep those grades in the straight 'A' bracket, because you can't eat a football or newspaper clippings after you graduate. You are in school first to get an education and secondly to compete in athletics. Keep yourselves in the best possible physical condition for another banner year in football," he added. Line coach was Clair Anderson and backfield coach was Dick Williams. 5 |
