The second hand dealer cannot describe the man who sold the gun to him but there is also a possibility that Fischer had somebody else make the sale. Fischer gave us his reason for taking the guns the fact that he needed money and had lost sizable amounts in gambling. I knew that he had done some gambling in Hast St. Louis, Ill., which is wide open. I hate to be one to tell him "I told you so" but I had on more than one occasion told him that I thought he had better stay away from those places for they would get him for plenty sooner or later. Of course, that is about as far as I could go since you can't tell a man what to do with his own money after working hours. Fischer owes an account with us and after making allowance for one week's pay he has coming there is still a balance owing of about $12.00 or $13.00. In figuring this up for him he mentioned the fact that he had only had one week of his vacation this year and he thought he should be paid for the other week. This may be quite true but I believe anyone trying to make a clean break would certainly not quibble about one week's vacation. I had to let Mitch in on this whole thing almost from the beginning because he is in charge of the shop and would naturally have a right to know where his men are. After Fischer got in touch with me Tuesday he said that he had some of his own personal tools here and would like to have me get them together for him. Mitch, of course, knew more about which were his tools and those that belong to the Company so I had him get them together. After we finished our talk last night Fischer went out to get his tools and in addition to the ones Mitch had segregated for him he claimed he owned a set of screw drivers, some chisels, a few pin drivers, and a few checkering tools, claiming that he had made them on his own time. I knew that he had made them from our materials and doubted his statement as to making them on his own time, but nevertheless I let him go ahead to see just how far he would go. He took these tools home and this morning Mitch came in the office actually boiling because he had taken these tools, saying that if he says he made them on his own time it is nothing but a bare face lie. The tools, according to Mitch, were made from our materials on our time. We, of course, can get the tools back if you think it important, but the few dollars involved, if it gives us a better picture of his character is probably worth it. Fischer wants to make good on everything he has taken, at least everything he admits he has taken, and I think I will go with him to the Pawn Shop today and recover seven of these guns. The Police have one and one has been sold by the pawn broker. Arnold will, of course, have to pay at least our cost on this one gun in addition to the pawn tickets and interest on the other guns. We have not heard directly from the FBI. Whether or not they will prosecute him we do not know. The Police report to us that the FBI does not tell them very much about their part of the case and that all they know is that the FBI says they are still investigating.
