A copy of this letter, as well of a letter addressed to the corporation at St. Louis, the Collector, is attached hereto for your information. it appears that the letter sent by Mr. Thatcher to the Commissioner has had the effect of expediting the examination. That is unfortunate as Mr. Russell had a verbal agreement with Mr. Hope, the head of the Miscellaneous Tax Division in the Collector's office at St. Louis, to withhold making the examination until the suit was settled. There does not seem to be anything that we can do about it now. Was quite interested in your statement that you are in a position to advise upon the question of claims arising out of the present European conflict.
