Because of these publications, King James of England, cast Thomas into prison, from the effects of which he died. For a year William had to hide to avoid a similar fate. When the Pilgrims decided to go to America the older members of the congregation who were unfit to face the long journey and the hardships which would follow, asked Pastor Robinson to remain in Leyden with them.
