Show Page 4 SIGNPOST Homecoming Edition Weber Clashes With Carroll In Homecoming Game Friday Fighting Saints of Carroll college will furnish the fireworks for tomorrows homecoming game at 8:00 at the city stadium. The Saints have registered a win over Westminster, 7 to 2, and a tie with the University of British Columbia, 13 to 13. The Weberites have a record of four straight victories, the last two from favored Califor nian teams. Carroll uses a double wing formation and sometimes a T. Being a lighter team, they depend on passing over their heavier oponents. Head coach for the Saints is Johnny Gagiardi. Backfield coach is Rev. Ray Hunthausen and line coach is Luke Rivers. Doc Swenson Leads Webers Athletics Growth of athletics at Weber college is largely responsible to Reed K. Swenson, director of athletics. Reed is now serving his fourth term as National president of the National Junior College Athletic Association, an association of nearly two hundred junior colleges. Dr. Swenson received his Doctor of Education degree at the University of Utah last June. In 1933, Dr. Swenson left Murray high school to come to Weber college, and ever since he has devoted time and energy to building a better sports program at Weber. The duties of head basketball coach are his also. He has had teams in national competition for the last five years. They have won the Region Four, four state championship four years and captured the ICAC conference crown in 1950. His team placed fourth nationally in 1947., sixth nationally in 1950, and tenth in national competition in 1951. Poet Finds Hunters Intricate Failures Talk of hunting seasons approaching difficulties and disappointments prompts Signpost to remind hunters of Ogden Nashes characterization of them: The hunter crouches in his blind, Neath camouflage of every kind. He conjures up a quacking noise, To lend allure to his decoys. This grown up man, With pluck and luck, Is hoping to outwit A duck. Highlights of the hard fought contest were short, fast passes by Burt Hunsaker, and long punts by Ron Stephens. Darwin Stone, a freshman representing Sigma carried most of the load for the Sigma crew. It was the much smaller line for Sigma that spelled the difference at the end of the game. A thrilling game is promised when the white hats of Excelsior meet the sisters of Phoenix. This contest will be wide open because of the great rivalry between the two clubs. Competition will be high in intra murals this year and all teams will be trying for the trophy which is given to the winner of the numerous activities throughout the year.1 came to scoring Co Captains Don Butler, left, and Lamont Lamb will start tomorrows Homecoming game as co captains for the Wildcats. Wildcats Grab 19 13 Upset Victory Over Giants for Teams Fourth Win By Allen Cook Webers Wildcats racked up their second straight upset victory over a California team and fourth straight win of the season last Friday, October 5 this time a 19 to 12 win over favored College of Sequoias from Visalis, California. Undefeated thus far in grid play, the Wildcats avenged last years 19 to 13 defeat and handed the Giants their first 1951 loss before approximately 1500 fans at the city stadium. Hall Stars Roger Hall, Webers passing quarterback, scored the first touchdown of the game in the first period ending a drive early in the period by the Weberites. He smashed into the end zone from the seven yard line. The conversioon was wide. Visalis proved the game no pushover as they started a drive which began on their own 30 right after the Weber kickoff. With Lew Florence and Bob Line doing most of the driving, the Giants plowed to the touchdown zone at a rate of about a first down every two plays. Florence finally tied the score from Webers five yard line. Pass to Wilkinson A long pass fired into Wildcat Ron Wilkenson by Hall was good for 32 yards and a touchdown early in the second quarter after Hall and Lamont Lamb had worked the ball into Giant territory. Hall kicked the extra point giving Weber a 13 to 6 lead. However the visitors kept up with the pace as Fran Weddle scored for the Giants climaxing a passing drive by Bob Line. The third period saw both teams fighting for the goal lines but neither being able to make it. At one time the Californian boys were finally stopped on the Weber 15. But this was the closest either team Hall Again In the final period the Weberites started their final touchdown drive when Hall passed the Milt Mecham team down the field toward the goal post. Hall then arounsed the fans by twisting away from two Giant tacklers who almost had him on the ground and then swerving his way the remaining twenty yards into the end zone for the score. Halftime activities featured four bands who played patriotic music and paraded around the field. These four were the Hill Air Force band, Weber College band, Weber High School band and the Ogden ROTC band. Webers Whip club also participated.
