Show 14 THIRTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT III. Scripture Reading, 1st Semester.A selected course of reading aloud from the Four Gospels intended to train the students in the art of reading and to illustrate certain leading events and teachings in the life of the Savior. 2nd Semester: A similar course from the Acts and Epistles, with certain selections from the Old Testament, chiefly to illustrate doctrinal principles. Throughout the course attention is paid to correct pronunciation, distinctness of utterance, breathing exercises, etc., and to the meaning of the text. One hour daily throughout the year. IV. Singing.Practice in part singing, the object being to acquaint the young men with the most useful and popular missionary hymns. In this course the Y. M. M. I. A. and Missionary song book is used. Two hours per week throughout the year. In connection with courses 1 and 2, special attention will be given to missionary correspondence, theme writing, testimony bearing, and argumentation and extempore speaking on the principles of the Gospel. MUSIC. This course will include the principles of sight reading mixed and male chorus work. The sight reading course will be a progressive arrangement of studies commencing with exercises based upon the simple harmonic combination to be found in the major and minor scales, and continuing through easy stages to the more difficult. In both chorus classes special attention will be given to artistic singing as applied to chorus work. PREPARATORY BRANCHES. Grammar, (Seventh Grade.)Reed and Kellogg's Graded Lesson's in English, and composition throughout the year. Five recitations per week. Grammar, (Eighth Grade.)Reed and Kellogg's Higher Lessons in English, complete. Abundant practice in composition work. Five recitations per week, throughout the year. Arithmetic I.The elementary principles of arithmetic will be thoroughly studied as far as, and including practical measurements. Milne's Arithmetic used as text. Five recitations per week throughout the year. II. Milne's Arithmetic completed. Wentworth's High School Aritmetic for supplementary work. Five recitations per week throughout the year. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 15 Geography.Frye's Complete Geography with special reference to Utah and Weber county. Three recitations per week throughout the year. Drawing.Two weekly recitations. Work from objects, with some attention to decorative design and historical ornament. Penmanship.Vertical and slanting penmanship. Three recitations per week. Orthography.This study is required of all preparatory students. Seventy Lessons in Spelling, A New Speller. Daily recitations throughout the year. Reading.Two daily recitations throughout the year. Selections from standard authors. History, (Eighth Grade.)A thorough course in American History will be given. Scudder's History as text. Elocution.Special attention will be given to voice culture, articulation and the rendering of literary selections. Five recitations per week throughout the year, Fulton & Trueblood as text. BUSINESS BRANCHES. Phonography.The training in this branch is designed to make good practical stenographers. Daily recitations in class and ample individual drill will be given. Text books: Pitman and Howard's Manual of Phonography, Reporter's Companion, etc. Typewriting.A systematic course of lessons in correspondence, legal and commercial, will be given throughout the year. Bookkeeping.The system of the famous Ellis method of "Learning to do by doing." The student is brought into direct contact with drafts, bills, receipts, notes, checks and all classes of commercial papers until he becomes familiar with their form and use. Commercial Law.-This course deals with the laws governing trade and finance, how to draw up papers in legal form, common usages and practice pertaining to contracts, agency, partnership, negotiable paper, in fact everything relating to transactions between man and man. The law will be discussed with reference to the Utah code. |
