Geo. Washington. Friendship is one of the greatest and holiest gifts that God has given to man. It helps us enjoy the plesures of life, and aids us to endure the pains. "For a friend is one who smiles on our fortunes, frowns on our faults, sympathizes with our sorrows, weeps at our berevements and is a safe fortress at all times of trouble." Some people try to obtain friend- ship just because they wish a wealthy friend or because of a different motive behind it than the accomplishing good or serving some one. While others desire friendship because of selfish motives. But the only way to get a friend is to be one. After you obtain friendship you cannot neglect it; for to retain it you must keep the fire kindled in your friend and yourself. Friendship is progressive, and unless you have implicit faith in the trueness of your friend you cannot retain him. Friendship makes life worth living. If while suffering, you know The Acorn 19 a friend is sharing your sorrows, the pain becomes less keen, the bereavement less sad. In our life we should aim to get friends, retain them and be true friends to as many as need friendship. "Friendship, mysterous cement of the soul, Sweetness of life, and solder of Society." ONLY A DREAM Last night I dreamed that I was at Washington. I was among the leading people, and although there was class distinctions, it depended upon the moral and intellectual development rather than upon the money each person had. All the senators and representatives were honest, upright men, who could make and keep laws which were passed for the betterment of American citizens. I noticed that all the men who held responsible positions neither smoked nor drank intoxicants, nor had any other pernicious habit; the lawyers were bright, shrewd men who dealt fairly in all things. When I called upon the president he told me that all offices of the government were held by pure men who had the interests of the people at heart, and that they were all endeavoring to do their part to make this an ideal nation. All graft and devises to obtain money dishonestly had been wiped out. I learned that America had made very great strides along educational lines. The Bible had been introduced in the schools, and the aim of every school was to produce young men and women with strong characters. All the churches had given up fighting each other and were spending their energies for the uplifting of their fellow men. There were no cashiers' checks, no clearing house currency; gold was the medium, and trust, the security. I awoke and was disappointed to find it only a dream. We have many students registered in this institution who are absolutely indiffiernt to everything that goes on. They don't take much interest in their classes; they take very little interest in athletics and no interest in class or Student Body affairs. Now this conition should not exist, not only for the school's sake but for the sake of the students themselves. It is a fact that the boys and girls who take the most interest in general school affairs are the leaders in the classes. They are up and doing in whatever they undertake. Each class needs just such enthusiastic members. Those who do not take part, are dissatisfied with what the others do and consequently are always grumbling.
