Show Planting SEVENTY EIGHT YEARS AGO a little company of brave and sturdy pioneers spanned the vast wilderness to find a new home in the mountains of the west. These pioneers walked most of the way from the Missouri River to the Great Salt Lake, a distance of more than a thousand miles. In their covered wagons were ploughs and other implements, seed grain, and a season's supply of provisions. For did they not have to plant crops for their subsistence during the following winter? In the spring of 1848 five thousand acres of land were under cultivation in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. Nine hundred acres had been sowed with winter wheat. The welfare of the people in the valley and of those who were to come from the far away frontier depended on the success of this crop. The present supplies of the settlers were getting very low. The brave little group was "a thousand miles from anywhere" and the only means of communication with the outside world was by ox team and pack- mule. If the harvest failed-what then? |
