Show Track CONSIDERING THE LIMITED MEANS together with the few men out, this year's track team has been very successful. The school athletic funds all leaked out before the track season opened and the track men have sup- ported themselves while on trips. Luckily for them, there have been only two meets. Only about ten men have shown themselves for track. These men, however, have been very strong in their respective lines, and have offered keen com- petition to the other junior colleges. The first meet of the season was the Provo Invitational meet. The team came home loaded down with ribbons and medals, the winners of the junior college section by many points. Stewart established a new discus record while Nelson did the same in the shot. The next was the northern division meet of the junior college league, held at Logan. There were a great many more entries than at Provo, and the team did not fare so well. Four first places were taken, and a number of seconds and thirds. The men out were as follows: Donnell Stewart William Beazer Gean Greenwell "Monk" Halliday Harold Farley "Star" Nelson Clifford Taylor Clifton Smith Milton Taylor "STAR" NELSON Tennis PLANS FOR A TENNIS TOURNAMENT among the students have been ar- ranged by the coach in conjunction with the tennis enthusiasts of the school. It is calculated by this means to select the best players among both the men and women and then they, if they so desire, may arrange meets with representatives of other Junior Colleges. The Eccles Cup is also contested for by players of Weber in competition with players from Ogden High School. This contest, however, is not a regular division of Weber athletics. Van Tanner and Kenneth Ballantyne played for this cup last year. Messrs. Tanner, Cortez, Nelson and Stewart are playing good games this season. Swimming THE OPENING OF THE GYMNASIUM marked the beginning of a new sporting activity at Weber, namely swimming. A class meet disclosed the fact there were some swimmers in the school of more than ordinary abilities and several looked ahead to the possibility of the school's entering intercollegiate competition. No steps were taken in this direction by the athletic department, how- ever, but Mr. Van Tanner and Mr. Willis White did enter the Intermountain A. A. U. meet held at the Deseret Gym at Salt Lake. Mr. White was the fastest swimmer that was seen in the gym pool all season. His best time was 8 4-5 sec. for the 20 yd. splash. Other men of outstanding abilities were C. Erwin Nelson, Rigby Jacobs and Harrison Parker. |
