THE QUESTION: "RESOLVED, THAT FOR UTAH A CLASSIFIED PROPERLY TAX SHOULD BE SUBSTITUTED FOR THE PRESENT GENERAL PROPERTY TAX." Weber, represented by Rulon Beus and Clarence Brown, upheld the negative side. The decision was unanimous for B. Y. C. LELAND MONSON CLARENCE BROWN Grant Oratorical Contest THE FOURTH GRANT ORATORICAL CONTEST of Weber was awarded to Clarence Brown of the Sophomore Class. The general subject for the contest was "After One Hundred Years, the Message of Moroni." Mr. Brown's speech was a real oration, and the prize was fairly awarded when given to him. The speech of Mr. Leland Monson, however, was of such high order and content that President Grant awarded an autographed book to both the contestants. We are proud of these two orators. They would show up brilliantly in any forensic con- test in the state. The Barker Contest THE JAMES L. BARKER EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING CONTEST, held during the week of October twenty-ninth to November fifth inclusive, was won by Clarence Brown of the Sophomore Class. Other contestants in the final contest were Leland Monson, Sophomore, and Ruth Folkman, Freshman. The general topic was "The Social Value of Religion." Mr. Monson spoke on "The Social Value of Religion in the State." Miss Folkman discussed "The Social Value of Religion in the Home." The general subject for the first three contests was "Civic Righteousness." The Sophomores won first place. The subject tor the fourth contest was "The Value of the Weber Gymnasium," in which the Sophomores also won first place. Professor Barker, in creating the Barker Contest, provided an excellent means of development for the budding orators of the school. Nothing has done more to make Weber students well-known in forensic contests. Following is the tabulation of the entire series: Sophomores Place Freshmen Place Contest No. I. J.
