Show music one of the most important features of the school this year and probably one which has attracted a great deal of attention is the music at the beginning of the year the choir was organized and has held regular weekly practices to furnish devotional work prof ballantyne has worked hard to bring it to a high standard and some beautiful anthems besides the regular work have been rendered the singing at devotional exercises has been looked forward to each morning and appreciated by all another very important feature of the school is the conservatory of music which was established shortly after the beginning of school last sept with profs joseph ballantyne john j mcclellan and willard e weihe as instructors voice culture piano and organ harmony and violin are the branches taught it has proved a pro nounced success and will no doubt be a permanent part of the academy they have given us two recitals of which we are very proud and in which the public took a great deal of interest it has done a great deal to popularize the school and has created a greater love for musical art there is a large enrollment at the conservatory and the work done has given a feeling of satisfaction it is to be hoped that soon all other branches of music may be taken up the school band has been working diligently with prof nichols as director to keep up its excellent standard several times they have appeared on the streets and have received many compliments for their fine music the band has displayed their talent and good will to good advantage this year in going to meet the different basket-ball teams in advertising the lecture course and in advertising the witch of the woods our orchestra is deserving of a great deal of praise they have never failed at our balls to furnish us good lively music they have had regular practices all year and their music has at all times been a source of satisfaction the choristers training class started in december and the sight singing class have been doing excellent work which will be a credit to them when school is over prof j j mcclellan of the conservatory of music took part in a grand concert at broadway theatre in denver his part was the performance of the great grieg piano concerto in three movements with the denver symphony orchestra it was said that notwithstanding the excellent work the artist has done elsewhere the piano work done there was one of his greatest successes and was deserving of the ovation that he received some of prof ballantyne's pupils took part in the concert april 27th given by the tabernacle choir and assisted by the salt lake mists judith anderson contralto john robison baritone and prof george e skelton violinist prof weihe like the other members of the conservatory feels that this department has been a success his entire time at the conservatory has been occupied and his pupils are doing well one of the best and most successful musical treats we have had for a long time was the operetta the witch of the woods given by our students under the management of mrs harriet purdy smith the production is one that takes in a great number of characters and gives good opportunity for a great variety of work . everything was attractive and well worth the time spent in practice and worthy of the large audiences which almost filled the opeta house at each of the three performances * we are proud to know that we have such talent among our students and that they are so ready and willing to use it for such a noble cause the success however was greatly due to the ability of mrs smith who did so much hard practicing with them and who took the part of the witch also other talented people from the outside who took some of the leading parts taken altogether the witch of the woods was one of the most successful affairs ever attempted by the school the proceeds have been given to the fund for our new building edmund vance cooke the humorous poet philosopher and im personator gave his lecture entitled just between you and me a the tabernacle monday february 12 his popularity with the ogdei public can be judged by the crowded house and enthusiastic audienci that greeted him the entire program was excellent abounding ii wh and pathos blended with philosophy mr cooke will always b welcomed by his ogden admirers fits and misfits and educational lecture entitled musical n by h spillman riggs on february 23 he included by giving selectii r david mckay a member of the devotional on monday w s a board o elder heber scowcroft addressed the school on tuesday february 7 many beautiful illustrations of the lives and works of great men ere given and brought out his theme living for the good of others sautifully all were very much benefited and hope to hear from him jain prof lewis f mrench of the w s a board was also present principal d o mckay gave one of his heart to heart talks the students monday march 5 his theme being character re tation and honor of the weber stake academy |
