Show LETRS based spelling curriculum 391 Day 1 Introduction to the Spelling Rule: Change the y to i for a suffix addition (5 minutes):If a word ends in y and a suffix is added,change the y to i. What is a suffix? It is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to modify or change the meaning. The suffix -ed shows past tense. The suffix -ing shows the “act of” or present tense. The suffixes -er and -est shows comparison. The suffix -er can also mean “one who.” The suffix -ful means full of and the suffix -less means without. The suffix -ly means “in this way.” The suffixes -s and -es makes the word plural. xamples #1: baby + es = babies E Examples #2: fry + ed = fried Examples #3: silly + est = silliest here are two exceptions to the rule. If there is a vowel before the vowel, T keep the y. Also keep y to avoid having two i’s next to each other. They will need a black and red writing tool. The teacher will guide the students on the whiteboard or smartboard with corresponding colored writing tools. Students will do this on the 3x4 Word Sort table found in the resources. Have students write consonants in black and vowels in red on the table. Write y to i at the top of the first column in black. Write Keep y at the top of the second column in black. Write irregular at the top of the 3rd column in black. Under the first column write y to i (consonants in black and vowels in red): candies, dried, luckiest. Under the second column write Keep e words (consonants in black and vowels in red): played, trying, boys. Under the third column write irregular words (consonants in black and vowels in red): around, caught, thank. After writing all the words, recite each word, sound out each sound in the word, emphasize if the y is changed to i or if y is kept.
